JANAM Many Waters
2008
Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, CA

Many Waters is an installation initially created for the 7+Fig Art Space in downtown Los Angeles.  The title “Many Waters” is taken from the Song of Solomon “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it.”  The installation, composed of photo collages, painted wall mural, and sculptural elements, explored the relationship between the natural growth and urban growth Kyungmi Shin observed during travels to her Ghana home.  Inspired by the chaotic and robust mangrove forest and the shanty towns near her home in the western region of Ghana, she created a sprawling installation that playfully imagines fantastically overgrown sculptural forms and impossible landscapes created by shanty shacks.  Images shown here are from the second iteration of the installation at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
